Can I use euros in Croatia?

In this article you will find out what currency does Croatia use and what is the best currency to bring to Croatia. Popular questions we get asked allot are “What currency does Croatia use?” “Can I use euros in Croatia?” and “What currency is best to bring?” We have done all the research for you!

What currency does Croatia use?

Even though Croatia is part of the European Union presently the currency is the Croatian kuna? The abbreviation for kuna is KN or HRK. You will often see these abbreviations after prices, for example 100kn (100 kuna). The plural for kuna is kune and it is pronounced as ‘koo-neh’.

Can you use Euros in Croatia?

The answer is both yes and no. Officially it is illegal to do any transactions in any other currency other than the Croatian kuna. However as a result of tourism playing such a big role in the Croatian economy there are ways around this. Some shops, restaurants, hotels and bars do accept euros however the rate will often be poorer (this is something to keep in mind). The exchange rate hovers around 7.5kn for one euro however some places do exchange low as 7.0kn for one euro.

What do the banknotes and coins look like?

One kuna is subdivided into 100 lipa. As you can see the banknotes start from 10, 20, 50, 100, 200, 500 and 1000. The coins are 1, 2 and 5 kuna and the lipas are 1, 2, 5 20 and 50. You will often find that shops round up the smaller lipas also don’t be surprised that if you are short 1,2,5 20 and even 50 lipas some places will let you off.

What currency is best to bring to Croatia?

Kuna is the best to bring to Croatia however you can bring other currencies. Obviously be far the best currency other than the kuna is euro followed by US dollar and British pound. If you are planning to bring other currencies not mentioned above then check with the banks in Croatia first. All banks in Croatia have a list of currencies they accept I would suggest you check prior to your visit to avoid any problems.
